BI on the Fly: A Guide to Web-based Business Intelligence

When selecting solutions in the emerging web-based BI space, organizations will evaluate architecture, rather than features or functions. This report identifies and outlines a framework to evaluate web-based BI solutions. The Technology Evaluation Center (TEC) market report presents head-to-head comparisons of four competing BI vendors and their web-based offerings.

In the report, TEC identifies and rates vendors based on web-based development and administration tools, OLAP capabilities, technology and administration capabilities, and reporting and analysis. The analysis focuses on LogiXML, Information Builders, Microsoft, and Business Objects. The results are based on the latest request for information (RFI) data supplied to TEC by the four vendors. Subsets of sixty criteria within four areas are compared based on TEC’s standard BI RFI and the general requirements are evaluated by end user organizations.

To eliminate any chance of bias, and to ensure a level playing field, all criteria are given equal weight and priority - that is, no area of functionality is treated as being more important than any other. The scorings are based on whether vendors offer functionality out of the box, through customization, modification, third party support, etc. The purpose of this report is not to cast any vendor solution in a positive or negative light, but to give the reader an overall sense of each solution’s relative strengths and weaknesses within the web-based BI market.
